Stopping employees using their mobile phones whilst driving

As an employer you are responsible for your employees whilst they are conducting your business. You are responsible for their health and safety and to ensure, as much as you possibly can, that they do not endanger anyone else.

One of the ways in which your employees can cause a problem for you as an employer is by using their mobile phones whilst driving. This puts them, and other road users, in danger.

Whilst you may consider it common sense not to use a mobile whilst driving a vehicle, unfortunately it is an all too common sight to see drivers with a mobile seemingly glued to their ear whilst simultaneously trying to steer their car or van.

A written company policy which expressly forbids the use of mobile phones whilst driving and has penalties for committing such offences is not going to stop people doing it. Supplying all drivers with bluetooth headsets would be a better option, but is still open to abuse if a driver forgets his headset or it runs out of battery life.

There is a better option in the form of mobile phone software. We originally sold this software as a tracking system, as it allows you to see all of your employees movements via a real-time online interface. However, as the software has improved and broadened its scope it would now be better called an "employee management system".

As well as the obvious benefits to be gained from keeping tabs on all of your employees whilst out and about on your business, it also offers a range of other features such as a panic button system for lone worker protection.

One of its most useful features is the ability to recognise that a user is in a vehicle and to physically bar the phone from working whilst the vehicle is moving unless connected to a hands free kit. Even if you do not utilise this level of security, it can report every time a phone is used in a moving vehicle.

For more information about the potential benefits for your business visit our dedicated tracking website, 21c Vehicle Tracking, which will show you how quickly an employee management system could pay for itself.
